Troubleshooting Air Leaks in Your Pool SystemUpdated a month ago

An air leak can significantly impact the performance of your pool. One common indicator is the presence of air bubbles returning to the pool at the return jets while the system is running. To locate and resolve the air leak, follow these steps:

Steps to Identify and Fix the Leak

  1. At the Pool

    • Disconnect the pool cleaner.
    • Ensure the water level is sufficiently topped up.
    • Check that all skimmer components (e.g., vacuum plate, weir cuff, elbows, valve) are correctly seated and undamaged.
  2. At the Pump

    • Inspect all o-rings on unions and the pump lid for damage or improper seating.
    • Apply a generous amount of silicone-based lubricant to ensure a proper seal.
  3. Inspect Valves

    • Check any check valves, two-way valves, or three-way valves for potential damage.
  4. At the Filter

    • Inspect for leaks and check all o-rings, ensuring they are well-lubricated.
    • For a sand filter, backwash it. For a cartridge filter, remove the element for thorough cleaning.
    • Monitor the pressure gauge readings before and after cleaning to identify any inconsistencies.
  5. At the Chlorinator Cell

    • Examine the union o-rings. Grease them thoroughly and ensure they are tightened properly.
  6. Inspect Other Components

    • Inspect any pre-filters or additional pumps for potential issues.
    • If the problem persists, consider using a product like Lo-Chlor Leak Sealer. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product label, as multiple doses may be necessary.

Additional Notes

By following these steps, you can address most common air leak issues in your pool system. If the problem remains unresolved, you may need to consult a professional pool technician for further assistance.
