How to Replace a Pool Filter Cartridge?Updated a month ago

Replacing your pool filter cartridge is a simple but critical task to keep your water clear and your system running efficiently. Here’s how to swap out old cartridges the right way—no stress, no mess.

Tools You’ll Need

Step-by-Step Replacement Guide

1. Turn Off the Pump

  • Shut off power at the circuit breaker (safety first!).

  • Close skimmer and main drain valves to prevent water backflow.

2. Release Pressure & Open the Filter

  • Pull the pressure relief valve on the filter tank until water stops hissing.

  • Unscrew the filter tank lid. If stuck, tap gently with a rubber mallet.

3. Remove the Old Cartridge

  • Lift out the old cartridge carefully to avoid dislodging debris into the tank.

  • Check for cracks, torn pleats, or stiffness (signs it’s time to replace).

4. Clean the Filter Housing

  • Hose out the tank interior to remove dirt, bugs, or scale.

  • Soak the tank in filter cleaner if there’s heavy buildup.

5. Install the New Cartridge

  • Align the new cartridge’s base with the filter’s manifold.

  • Ensure it sits evenly and isn’t forced into place.

6. Reassemble & Lubricate

  • Clean the tank lid’s O-ring with water, then apply silicone lubricant.

  • Screw the lid back on (hand-tighten only—no wrenches!).

7. Restart the System

  • Open valves, restore power, and prime the pump.

  • Check for leaks and monitor pressure (should return to baseline).

Maintenance Tips for Aussie Pools

  • Clean cartridges monthly in summer (hose pleats from top to bottom).

  • Replace cartridges every 2–3 years (sooner in dusty or bushfire-prone areas).

  • Store spares: Keep an extra cartridge for emergencies.

When to Call a Pro

  • Repeated pressure spikes after replacement (possible manifold crack).

  • Difficulty removing the lid or aligning cartridges.

  • Suspected damage to the filter tank.
