How Do I Winterise My Pool in Australia?Updated 2 months ago

Winter in Australia doesn’t always mean freezing temps, but cooler weather and reduced pool use call for adjustments to save time, water, and chemicals. Whether you’re closing the pool completely or just cutting back on maintenance, here’s your step-by-step guide to winterising.

Option 1: Partial Winterisation (For Mild Winters)

Ideal for most regions (e.g., QLD, NSW, WA) where pools are used occasionally or heated.

Step 1: Balance the Water

  • Test with pool test strips and adjust.

    • pH: 7.4–7.6 (prevents scaling or corrosion).

    • Chlorine: 2–3 ppm (holds longer in cooler water).

    • Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm (stabilises pH).

  • Add a winter algaecide to prevent blooms during idle periods.

Step 2: Reduce Pump Runtime

  • Run the filter 4–6 hours daily (down from summer’s 8+ hours).

  • Clean skimmer baskets and backwash/clean filters monthly.

Step 3: Cover Up

  • Use a pool cover to block debris, reduce evaporation, and retain heat.

    • Solid covers: Best for leaf protection.

    • Mesh covers: Let rainwater through but keep out debris.

Step 4: Maintain Light Checks

  • Test water fortnightly and top up chlorine as needed.

  • Remove debris from the cover weekly to prevent staining.

Option 2: Full Winter Closure (For Cold Zones)

For southern regions (e.g., VIC, TAS) where pools are unused for months.

Step 1: Deep Clean & Balance

  • Vacuum and brush walls/floors to remove algae or dirt.

  • Shock the pool to 5–10 ppm chlorine and balance pH/alkalinity.

  • Add winterising chemicals (long-term algaecide + stain preventer).

Step 2: Drain Equipment (if applicable)

  • Lower water level 10–15cm below skimmer (to prevent cracking).

  • Drain pumps, filters, heaters, and chlorinators to avoid frost damage.

  • Blow out plumbing lines with air compressor (if below 0°C risks).

Step 3: Secure the Cover

  • Choose a heavy-duty safety cover anchored with straps or weights.

  • Use air pillows under covers (for above-ground pools) to prevent ice damage.

Step 4: Store Accessories

  • Remove and clean ladders, robotic cleaners, and solar blankets.

  • Store chemicals in a cool, dry place.

Pro Tips for Aussie Conditions

  • Saltwater pools: Lower chlorinator output but keep it running intermittently.

  • Bushfire-prone areas: Cover the pool during ash fall and clean filters after.

  • Heavy rain zones: Check cover sagging and pump out excess water.

  • Leafy backyards: Use a pool sock in the skimmer for easy debris removal.

When to Reopen

  • Partial winterisation: Ramp up filtration and testing as temps rise in spring.

  • Full closure: Remove cover, refill water, rebalance chemicals, and restart equipment.
