Floc GuideUpdated 8 months ago

Floccing or using floc should be the absolute last resort when it comes to rescuing your pool.

For extreme cases of pool restoration WITHOUT using floc, you can check out our Green to Clean guide here.

If you really need to use floc, here's a quick guide:

How to Use Flocculants in Your Pool

  1. Balance the pH: Ensure your pool’s pH is between 7.4 and 7.6 for optimal results.
  2. Set Filter to Recirculate: Turn your sand or DE filter to the “recirculate” setting. This prevents the flocculant from entering the filter.
  3. Add Flocculant: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to determine the correct amount. Dilute the flocculant in a bucket of water and pour it evenly around the pool edges.
  4. Circulate the Water: Run the pump for about 2 hours to mix the flocculant thoroughly.
  5. Turn Off the Pump: Let the pool sit undisturbed for 8-12 hours. The flocculant will bind particles together and sink them to the bottom.
  6. Vacuum to Waste: Carefully vacuum the settled particles to waste. Do not use the filter setting, as this can clog the filter.
  7. Refill and Balance: After vacuuming, refill the pool to the proper level and balance the water chemistry.

Warnings About Filters

  1. Do Not Use with Cartridge Filters: Flocculants can clog cartridge filters, making them ineffective. Use a clarifier instead if you have a cartridge filter. (If you really need to use with a cartridge filter, remove the elements before floccing)
  2. Vacuum to Waste: Always vacuum to waste to avoid clogging your filter with the flocculant and debris.
  3. Monitor Filter Pressure: After using flocculants, check your filter pressure regularly. Backwash or clean the filter as needed to maintain proper flow.
